2018 was a tough year, as Zimbabwe said goodbye to some of our best known and well-loved figures. Here’s a look at all of the figures Zimbabwe lost in 2018 so far who have inspired generations.

Roy Bennett

Roy Bennett, a prominent Zimbabwean opposition figure, died on the January 18, 2018, with his wife in a helicopter crash in the US state of New Mexico. Bennett was a Zimbabwean politician and member of the British South Africa Police. He was also a member of the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe for the seat of Chimanimani, where he was affectionately known as Pachedu.

Morgan Tsvangirai

Opposition veteran Morgan Tsvangirai who was one of Africa’s most globally admired politicians and lived to see the fall of his political nemesis Robert Mugabe. Tsvangirai, the country’s fiercest opponent of former president  Mugabe’s tyrannical 37-year rule, died on February 20, at the age of 65 in South Africa where he had been undergoing treatment for colon cancer.

Emmanuel Manyika

Veteran entertainer Emmanuel Manyika, famed for mimicking former President Robert Mugabe. Died on June 05, at the age of 59 on his way to West End Hospital in Harare after a short illness.

Mudzidzi Wimbo

Mudzidzi Wimbo was a Zimbabwean religious leader who founded the Johane Masowe Vadzidzi VaJeso. Wimbo was aged 96 at the time of his death. He died on the 12th of July 2018. Wimbo was born, Aaron Mhukuta Gomo was famous for numerous alleged prophecies. These include the 1957 prophesy where he prophesied that independent Zimbabwe would be led by a man with the name of an angel, Gabriel. This came to pass when Mugabe became the first post-colonial leader in 1980.

Paul Chingoka

Paul Chingoka was an avid and astute tennis administrator, he died on the 14 of July. It was during Chingoka’s era that tennis development in Zimbabwe scaled to the higher heights reaching semi finals of the Davis Cup. During his tenure as Tennis Zimbabwe President, Tennis flourished in the high density suburbs such as Chitungwiza, Emakhadheni among others. 

Charmaine Mangwende

ACTRESS Charmaine Mangwende who starred in the now-defunct ZBC soapie Studio 263 died in November. Mangwende made her name in her role Mai Huni in the popular popular production at the turn of the century.

Brian Rusike 

Brian Rusike died in September sadly his decomposing body was discovered nearly two months after his death. Rusike was famous for composing the popular Ruva Rangu song which dominated charts in the 80s and 90s.
