National Hero, the late Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, received a befitting send-off as thousands thronged the National Sports Stadium to celebrate the life of a man who used his musical gifts and talents to inspire the nation.

Tuku’s body was first taken to Pakare Paye Center for a church service and body viewing. It was then escorted by the army and police to the National Sports Stadium. Philip Mataranyika, the owner of Nyaradzo Funeral Services honoured Mtukudzi by personally driving the hearse with the national hero’s coffin.

Tens of thousands of people gathered at the stadium to bid their music icon farewell. Local artists gave an emotional yet befitting concert as a farewell to the legend.

A lot of people lined up their cars along airport road to get a glimpse of Mtukudzi ‘s casket as the hearse made its way to the One Commando Barracks.

Tuku’s body was airlifted from Harare this afternoon by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter. The music icon’s body has arrived in Madziva, Shamva district ahead of burial tomorrow.

The government has provided 43 buses which will ferry mourners to Madziva Sunday morning.
